Nebraska Family Council was instrumental in protecting the Biblical definition of marriage in Nebraska law. In 2000, Nebraska was one of the first states to place a definition of marriage into the state constitution. Prior to passage of the constitutional amendment protecting marriage, a petition was circulated by a Nebraska Family Council coalition that gave Nebraska voters an opportunity to vote on the marriage amendment. It was passed by over seventy-percent of voters. In 2006, a lawsuit brought by the ACLU challenged the Nebraska constitutional amendment. The Nebraska Attorney General and Nebraska Family Council successfully defended the lawsuit in federal court. It was a primary attempt to nationally redefine the institution of marriage.
